Grooming a dog goes beyond just enhancing its appearance; it’s essential for their overall health and comfort. Neglected fur can become excessively long and matted, leading to significant discomfort and health issues for our furry friends.
Many neglected and stray dogs require a significant makeover, and with some love and care, they can be transformed into vibrant companions.
A recent example of this is a rescue by Ozarks Pet Rescue, a nonprofit organization in Missouri, which helped a poodle mix named Larry. Larry had been spotted wandering as a stray near a gas station in Norwood, and despite several attempts to catch him, he roamed the streets for at least eight months.
During that time, his fur became extremely long and matted, completely obscuring his eyes.
However, last month, Ozarks Pet Rescue, working alongside animal control and a dedicated team of volunteers, successfully sedated Larry, caught him, and brought him to safety.
After being rescued, Larry tested negative for heartworms but positive for tick disease and whipworms. Although initially skittish, he has been gradually warming up to his rescuers during his recovery.
“He gave our board member a small kisses and belly but is still scared which will take time and patience!” Ozarks Pet Rescue shared on Facebook.
Most importantly, they provided Larry with a much-needed makeover, removing an astonishing 3 pounds of matted fur, which brought his total body weight down from 22 to 19 pounds.
The rescue shared before-and-after photos, showcasing a remarkable transformation:
People online were astonished by Larry’s transformation following his grooming.
“So hard to believe that sweet boy was underneath that shell of matted fur,” one comment stated. “He’s going to have a wonderful life, even if he’s a bit unsure right now. Thank you!”
“Oh my goodness… he is so cute under all of that matted fur,” another user remarked. “So thankful you all helped him out… I hope he gets the best home!”
Larry’s origins remain a mystery. Although he has been neutered, he wasn’t microchipped. He is currently on stray hold, with the rescue team searching for any potential owners.
If no one claims him, Larry will likely be available for adoption once he has fully recuperated. Many online have already shown interest in providing him with a loving home.
