Woman introduces new boyfriend to parents, horrified when meeting becomes family reunion

There are 8.1 billion people on the earth, so finding a partner who is not genetically related should not be too difficult. That being said, more than 250,000 Americans who are married to cousins would rather keep things inside the family.

One woman discovered after five months of dating that the man she had been seeing in her father’s family photos was, in fact, the one she had been thinking was “the one.”

An unfortunate story about how a woman in her mid-20s’ happiness at meeting her new boyfriend on a dating app turned into pure horror was shared on Reddit by the woman.

“I was talking to this guy on Hinge who had the softest of hazel eyes, and at the time, I thought he was the one,” the woman, Gelicca, continues. “After exchanging a few messages, we decide to go on a date, and soon after, we became a couple.”

After dating for five months, the woman and her boyfriend, who is also in his mid-20s, made the decision to meet each other’s families in an effort to strengthen their relationship.

There would be much planning and thinking put into the big introduction because their families were on different sides of the country.

“We had moved away from home, so we hadn’t had time to meet each other’s parents,” the author states. “Instead of doing the traditional dinner where I bring you over to meet my parents and you go over to meet yours,” we chose to have dinner with both of our parents.

The author claims that she was nervous about her parents seeing her new boyfriend because she was unaware at the time that they were previously acquainted.

When my father presented himself to my boyfriend’s mother, he looked directly at his cousin, Uncle’s daughter, and his face turned absolutely white. He then stood up from the table. “It took her a second to realize as well,” the woman says.

According to the posting, their parents have not seen one another for almost thirty years. Our parents told us we were related and that we could tell something was wrong by the way they looked at each other.

The fact that she and her ex-boyfriend relocated to the same city after leaving their respective states was an astonishing coincidence.

Ten percent of marriages globally are consanguineous, or cousin marriages. It is defined by sources as “a deeply rooted social trend among one-fifth of the world population, mostly residing in the Middle East, West Asia, and North Africa.”

Not so much in the US, though, unless you live in one of the 20 states (plus the District of Columbia) that allow it.

Enormously in love, the young couple made the decision to break up because they wanted to do the right thing and because they didn’t want to be scrutinized.

“Even though we were in love with each other, we decided it wasn’t the right decision. That was one of the hardest breaks I have ever gone through, but our family needed us to make that choice. I told my friends that it didn’t work out and discreetly removed everything from social media,” the author adds.

“Becoming aware of this horrible deed”
The woman, who created a new Reddit account in order to hide her often used profile, expresses her shock at the circumstances. “You hear millions of stories about people unintentionally hooking up with relatives and discovering this atrocity in the most awkward ways, and mine was no exception.”

Online users showered the comments section with support.

“I sorry; it looks like a challenging situation. Great respect for calling it quits so quietly, says a user. “Causes other than incompatibility or personal issues are the hardest to break up over,” claims another.

Some others cut in with words demeaning to certain cultures. One user adds, “I come from a country where parents would be delighted at this revelation.”

Yes, my first cousins are my aunt and uncle. They might live in an unusual situation, and other family members might discuss it in private, but they are a happy family with a healthy child.

The user continues, stressing that his family is not “sweethomealabama style,” saying, “That being said, it’s a messy situation in the family regardless of whether you choose to pursue it or break it off.”

Instead, some admirers on the internet decided to chuckle at the embarrassing family supper.

“Everyone placed a meatloaf order. One Redditor remarked, “And everyone agreed that it tasted just like Grandma used to make it.” “Perhaps they were dining at Olive Garden, where everyone is family,” another jokes.
