Revisiting The Omen recently, I found myself deeply affected by the unsettling fate of young Damien, played by Harvey Spencer Stephens.
His outstanding performance not only garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture but also marked the peak of his career.
However, after such a promising start, his trajectory took an unexpected turn.
Horror films from the 1970s possess a unique charm, often defined by their soft, gritty visuals that create an authentic atmosphere. Among these timeless classics, The Omen (1976) is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made.
The legendary Gregory Peck delivers a powerful performance as Robert, the American ambassador residing in Rome with his wife, Kathy.
Following a traumatic childbirth that results in their baby’s death, Robert is offered the chance to exchange the child for another newborn—a decision he makes without informing Kathy. They name the boy Damien, but as he turns five, eerie incidents begin to haunt the family.

Gregory Peck’s son tragically passed away before the movie was released.
In one of Gregory Peck’s biographies, it’s noted that he accepted the role at a substantial salary reduction, earning just $250,000, but he secured a deal for 10% of the film’s box office earnings. When The Omen went on to gross over $60 million in the U.S. alone, it became the most profitable performance of Peck’s career.
Peck is also remembered as a symbol of Hollywood integrity, seldom linked to controversy. However, his association with this horror film took on a somber tone, particularly given the heartbreaking loss of his own child, who ended his life shortly before the movie’s premiere.
Peck was compelled by the role of a guilt-ridden father, in part because he felt the burden of not being there for his son, Jonathon.
The incident profoundly impacted Gregory Peck—similar to the themes in The Omen—leading him to take a two-year break from acting after the tragedy.

Who is Harvey Spencer Stephens?
Let’s delve into the life of the young actor who portrayed Damien and explore how this iconic role influenced his life both on and off the screen.
Harvey Spencer Stephens was born on November 12, 1970, and is best known for his memorable role as the sinister child Damien Thorn in the 1976 classic The Omen.
Growing up in London, he was only four years old when he landed this transformative role. In a quirky twist, young Harvey had to dye his naturally blond hair black to fit his character.
The story behind how he secured the part is quite entertaining. Director Richard Donner had an unconventional audition technique: he encouraged all the boys to “attack” him as if they were going after Katherine Thorn during a tense church scene.
Stephens took this directive to heart—screaming, clawing, and even delivering a kick to Donner’s groin for good measure. According to News and Record, the young English boy performed so passionately that he ended up splitting the director’s lip.
His convincing performance earned him the role on the spot.
Promise to Father
The Omen became a monumental success, but it ultimately marked the only significant film role for Stephens. In many ways, he was just an ordinary kid who found himself in one of the most talked-about horror films of all time.
In interviews from that era, he preferred discussing his toys rather than future film projects. After the movie, he promised to buy his father, Jim (a scrap dealer), a Rolls-Royce costing $40,000.
His angelic appearance also led to appearances in various commercials, including those for baked beans and fish pies. Following his breakout role, Stephens was asked whether he was afraid to watch his own R-rated film.
”I don’t get scared easily, though I don’t like going upstairs by myself in the dark. That’s the only thing that frightens me, really,” he replied.
This response reflects just how small and innocent Stephens was at that time. Decades later, he could look back on his role and the film from a completely different perspective.
Left school and got a normal job
”It was good, but I was only five, a lot of it went over my head. It wasn’t a big deal. It was good while it lasted,” Stephens said in 2007.
Sure, he made a brief appearance in the 1980 TV movie Gauguin the Savage, but that was pretty much it.
”I did a film in Paris with David Carradine called In Search of Eden. After that, I was 10 or 11, I went to normal school, left school, went and got a job in the city.”
”Acting wasn’t something I really had my heart set on.”
In 2003, he made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show to talk about a project he was involved in to regain some attention. He humorously noted that he began attending autograph signings and horror conventions, often bringing along his tricycle.

Why Was Harvey Spencer Stephens Arrested?
Although his acting career following The Omen didn’t flourish as anticipated, Stephens has garnered attention for reasons that are far from positive.
In 2017, he found himself in trouble after a road rage incident involving two cyclists in Kent, England. He repeatedly honked his horn at the riders, who were cycling side by side. When one of them flipped him the bird, tensions escalated quickly.
Stephens pulled over, exited his flashy Audi RS6, and threw a punch, knocking the cyclist out cold. When the second cyclist attempted to intervene, Stephens retaliated by punching him twice, resulting in dental injuries.
As a consequence, Stephens received a 12-month jail sentence, which was suspended for two years, for causing bodily harm. Ironically, he was sentenced on Friday the 13th of December.

Is Harvey Spencer Stephens Married?
He also received a two-month sentence, suspended for two years, for criminal damage. At that time, he was living in Edenbridge, Kent, and was ordered to complete rehabilitation, perform 150 hours of unpaid work, and pay $1,300 in compensation to each victim.
Not exactly the kind of publicity you want, especially for the child star of a horror classic!
Since Stephens has stepped away from the acting spotlight, there isn’t much information available about him. However, according to The Sun, the 54-year-old is now a happily married father of two daughters. After his security firm went into liquidation in 2016, he has found a new path as a property developer.
Harvey Spencer Stephens Today
Who would have thought that the devilish child could become a real estate mogul?
I probably wouldn’t have recognized Harvey Stephens as the same person who portrayed the eerie Damien! Would you? Today, his hair is much thinner and not as blond as it once was.
He even joked about how dyeing his hair black for the film “ruined” it, but we can take that with a grain of salt!
