Throughout his nearly 50-year career, Liam Neeson has portrayed a diverse range of characters, from a Jedi Master to a humanitarian affiliated with the Nazi party, as well as a charming widower and a vengeful father in the Taken series, a role that solidified his status as an iconic action star.
Now, at 72, Neeson has expressed uncertainty about his ability to convincingly perform action scenes, stating that he is contemplating retirement, acknowledging that “it has to stop at some stage.”
Liam Neeson is a renowned Irish actor celebrated for his diverse roles across various genres, ranging from dramatic performances to action films. His career breakthrough occurred in the early 1990s when he portrayed Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List, which brought him international acclaim and numerous award nominations.
In the following decade, the Oscar-nominated actor took on several roles, from charming romantic leads to a prominent part as a Jedi Master in Star Wars, one of the world’s largest franchises.
Then, leveraging his “very particular set of skills,” Neeson transitioned into an action star with Taken (2008), a bold and unexpected career move that proved to be immensely successful.
The star of Love Actually’s pivot into high-octane thrillers surprised many. At 56, Neeson embraced a new identity as a leading man in action films, demonstrating his versatility and lasting appeal across genres and generations.
Taken was a monumental success, with Neeson’s portrayal of Bryan Mills, a former CIA operative on a mission to rescue his abducted daughter, striking a chord with audiences.
“It just seemed to have touched something in the psychic nerve of moviegoing audiences,” the father of two shared in an October 2024 interview with People.
His tough, no-nonsense depiction of a determined father transformed him into an unlikely yet highly effective action hero. The film’s iconic phone scene, in which Mills delivers his famous threat, became a pivotal moment in modern action cinema.
The film’s success not only cemented Neeson’s status as a late-career action star but also led to two successful sequels and other similar roles in action films.
“When he’s immersed in the character he is, you see the hurt, you see the pain,” remarked Hans Petter Moland, who directed Neeson in Cold Pursuit (2019) and the upcoming film Thug. “He truly becomes that man.”
Despite his success in action films and the unwavering confidence directors have in Neeson’s ability to handle fight scenes, the Absolution star recently announced plans to retire from the genre due to his age.
“I’m 72; it has to stop at some stage,” Neeson stated, while still remaining committed to performing many of his own stunts and fight sequences. This commitment is partly due to his collaboration with longtime stunt coordinator and double Mark Vanselow. Their partnership, which began with Taken, has been essential to Neeson’s late-career action roles. Vanselow not only choreographs intense fight sequences and stunts but also ensures that Neeson can perform as much of the action as possible safely, despite his age.
“You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me,” Neeson remarked.
The Oscar-nominated actor stated, “Maybe the end of next year. I think that’s it.”
However, the star appears to be gearing up for yet another career shift, this time into comedy.
He has recently wrapped filming for The Naked Gun, a reboot of the 1988 crime spoof comedy featuring the late Leslie Nielsen.
Set to be released in theaters in 2025, the film features Neeson in the role of cop Frank Drebin, originally portrayed by Nielsen, alongside Baywatch star Pamela Anderson.
“I’m madly in love with her. I can’t compliment her enough. She’s funny,” Neeson shares, expressing uncertainty about his own comedic abilities. “Whether I can carry it or not, I honestly don’t know.”
Anderson, on the other hand, insists that her co-star is “being modest.” “It was hard to keep a straight face in scenes together.”
