Meryl Streep, a beloved and legendary actress, was a prominent presence at the 76th Emmys. Known for her exceptional acting prowess, Streep was a nominee in the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series’ category for her role in *Only Murders in the Building*.
During the ceremony, Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney, the co-stars of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and a real-life couple, took the stage to present the award in Streep’s category.
While presenting the award, the husband-and-wife duo made a joke that has since sparked a mixed reaction online.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place,” McElhenney began. “They show crucial support when it’s really needed.”
To this, Olson responded, “Much like a jockstrap. What you were describing sounds very much like a jockstrap.”
In response, McElhenney hesitates and remarks, “No, it doesn’t! These roles make sure everything stays secure. Without this support, the whole package falls apart… alright, this does sound like a jockstrap.”
The audience erupts in laughter as Olson adds, “Are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?” To which McElhenney quickly replies,, “No! I’m so sorry, Meryl.”
The camera then cuts to Meryl Streep, who appears visibly stunned by the comparison. She looks down and mouths, “Oh, God.” This moment has since sparked a heated debate online.
Opinions are split on whether Streep took the joke poorly or was in on the humor.
One viewer tweeted, “I don’t know who wrote the #EmmyAwards tonight, but the dialogue is soooo cringe. They just compared Meryl Streep to a jock strap. Yeah, it’s that bad.”
Another added, “Wow. Meryl Streep did NOT like that jockstrap joke.”
Conversely, one person noted, “Meryl Streep’s face w the jockstrap joke. Standing ovation in my house rn.”
Although Streep did not win the award, she was seen smiling throughout the evening.
The actress dazzled in a beautiful baby pink Alexander McQueen suit, featuring bows, paired with her iconic glasses. She was seated next to her *Only Murders in the Building* co-star Martin Short, which fueled further speculation about their relationship.
Despite previous denials from Short about any romantic involvement between them, their frequent public appearances together have continued to spark rumors of a budding relationship.
