I Refuse to Be Treated Like a Maid Just Because I Live Rent-Free

Living with in-laws may be difficult, especially if you’re young, trying to support a newborn, and trying to make ends meet in this crazy world. However, things might get considerably more difficult if the expectations begin to mount up more quickly than unclean garments.

Imagine this: your mother-in-law shows up out of the blue and insists that you take on the position of the family’s live-in housekeeper when you’re trying to juggle your new duty as a parent with household duties. That’s just what happened to me, and I can guarantee you that spending the day under this circus tent wasn’t enjoyable.

Imagine this pleasant scenario: one day, after a challenging day of balancing everything, I get home to discover that my haven has been burglarized. Yes, all I possess.disappeared. Poof. vanished from my quarters as if David Copperfield had just stopped by.

My mother-in-law didn’t radiate a cozy, welcoming vibe; instead, she had already packed my luggage and positioned it next to the door. What did she say exactly? “If you can’t follow my rules, you’re not welcome in my house.” Pained! That made a bigger difference than a brick from an Olympian.

And where do you think my clever hero was hiding amid all of this drama? Presumably thinking about dinner while off to the side. His clever solution? “Until everything calmed down, maybe it would be best if you and the baby spent some time at your parents’ house.” What am I saying, really?

After uprooting my entire life and traveling great distances to be with him, I arrived at our new home expecting to be welcomed like an unwelcome guest. I’m back in the same house now, but everything is colder than a polar bear’s toenails after all this turmoil.

So here I am, stuck in a difficult situation. It feels more difficult than ever to stand my ground. But did you know that being “in-law” can sometimes seem like being “out-law”? My pals, you’ll constantly be speculating about life!
